Zehra Deovic Passed Away balansonline.baOne of the most famous performers of sevdalinka in B&H Zehra Deović passed away this morning in Sarajevo at the age of 77.

Zehra was born on December 9, 1938 in Foča. As a young girl, she became a member of the local Youth Cultural Artistic Society (KUD) “Jedinstvo”. Her talent soon took her to the former Radio Sarajevo, for which she has been recording exclusively Bosnian sevdalinkas since 1960. She traveled across all continents several times while performing a repertoire of traditional Bosnian love songs.

Deović represented the former Yugoslavia at a number of international festivals of ethno music. She recorded several plates and singles. During 38 years of working at the radio, she left a significant number of archive recordings of sevdalinkas, of which a large number are of great quality. Deović is the winner of the Show Business Award of Yugoslavia and the Show Business Award of B&H.

Besides traditional Bosnian songs – sevdalinkas, Zehra Deović actively participated in recording religious Muslim songs with which she participated at numerous festivals of religious songs, spiritual music nights, and the like.
