The process of re-exhumation of victims of the Srebrenica genocide has begun at the Srebrenica-Potocari Memorial Center, confirmed Emza Fazlic, spokesperson for the Institute for Missing Persons of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH).

Fazlic said that over the next seven days, the remains of 89 victims will be re-exhumed in order to add the remains that were subsequently found and identified.

The reassociation of the remains will be attended by the victims’ families, with whose approval this re-exhumation is being carried out.

“This year marks the 18th re-exhumation. In the previous 17 re-exhumations, a total of 1.536 reassociations were carried out, and 1.464 victims were re-exhumed. Another 70 victims were re-exhumed twice, while two victims were re-exhumed even three times,” said Fazlic.

To date, a total of 6.772 victims have been buried in Potocari, while about 250 murdered individuals have been buried at other locations according to their families’ wishes. More than 1.000 people from Srebrenica and surrounding municipalities are still being searched for.

The genocide in Srebrenica, confirmed by rulings of international and domestic courts, claimed the lives of more than 8.300 Bosniak men and boys from Srebrenica and the surrounding area.

For this and other war crimes committed in eastern BiH, more than 50 people have been convicted and sentenced to a total of around 780 years in prison.

Among them are Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic, the highest political and military leaders of Republika Srpska (RS), who were sentenced to life imprisonment.
