The royal city of Jajce, with as many as 30 national monuments, bears witness to the extremely rich history of Bosnia and Herzegovina. With rivers and a waterfall, enough reasons to visit.

Jajce – a town preserved in the spirit of the Middle Ages, a place where natural beauty and historical heritage form an inseparable whole. At the confluence of the Pliva and Vrbas rivers, there is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world, more than 20 meters high. Today, this royal capital preserves as many as 30 national monuments and represents an invaluable treasure of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s cultural and natural heritage.

walls of the medieval town of Jajce were carefully preserved in this small town, which is also known as “Bosnian Venice”.

It was the only fortress-urban settlement with all the features of an urban center back in the 15th century, and even today it is the most impressive and most imposing building in Jajce, whose construction marked the establishment of the town of Jajce.

It is still interesting to our historians because of the traces of the building that existed in this locality before this fortress, which we can see today and that remained intact to a large extent, and this can be seen on the stone that slightly differs in the lower layers of the fortress, or in its foundations.

In the past, this fortress was also known as “unconquerable” due to its size, high walls and drinking water at its very top.

Besides the fortress, the former royal town is rich in natural beauty as well – beautiful waterfalls surrounded by greenery and beautiful terraces that offer a beautiful view, as well as the beautiful lakes on Pliva River with the unavoidable mills.

This town has 29 other national monuments and its history is witnessed by the clock tower, museum, numerous mosques and other cultural and historical objects.

In 2024, Jajce saw a 14.2% rise in tourist arrivals compared to 2023, welcoming over 180,000 visits to local cultural and historical monuments in just the first nine months.

By end of the year, tourism firms marked Jajce’s summer 2024 season as the most successful ever in Central Bosnia Canton, boosted by a rich slate of events and heritage attractions

Tourism in Jajce is thriving – with record growth, expanding cultural events, sustainable tourism efforts, and improving infrastructure fueling this momentum. As a destination with deep historical roots and striking natural settings, it’s increasingly capturing attention from a diverse international audience.
