The Story of more than 280 Years old Wooden Mosque in BiH

Priluk is a village in the far west part of the Municipality of Zivinice, and it is famous for the old wooden mosque that is located within the harem (backyard), surrounded by serene silence and shade of oak woods. Inside the harem are placed graves that testify the 283 years of existence of this religious object.

“When it comes to history, the builders of this mosque, sheikh Hasan and sheikh Mustafa, built this mosque back in 1735 and 1736, according to written documents,” said Azaudin ef. Sakic.

Sakic noted that the way of its construction is unknown, i.e. no one knows how and from where did the builders bring timber, but the fact that the mosque is standing still in the same place for almost three centuries speaks enough about the quality of its construction.

“It can be said that the Old Mosque in Priluk represents a masterpiece of domestic architecture as well as a priceless cultural and historical treasure, and thus it has great importance both for the Majlis of the Islamic Community of Zivinice, the Municipality of Zivinice, residents of Priluk, but also for the culture of the entire BiH,” said Sakic.

“After the initiative of Dr. Suadin Strasevic and after all the documentation was collected, the Old Mosque in Priluk was proclaimed as the national monument of BiH on November 8, 2013.

Since the Old Mosque in Priluk was the only one in the village and its surroundings, the believers used to come on horseback or on foot for about ten kilometers to attend the Friday prayer.

It was in operation until the year of 1998 and all five prayers, Friday prayer and Eid prayer were performed there.
