The Embassy of the United States (US) in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) awarded the recognition for courage in public action to Irma Baralija from Mostar.

On the occasion of Women’s History Month, the U.S. Embassy awards recognition to brave women of BiH society.

Baralija was awarded recognition for challenging BiH to live its European future and advocating for the right to participate in the democratic elections in Mostar.

The embassy said that they would like to thank all the women for what they do each day and for showing everyone what brave women can achieve.

At the beginning of March, recognition was given also to nana Fata Orlovic for her persistent fight for justice in exercising her property rights, and last week BiH Ambassador to the Czech Republic, Martina Mlinarevic Sopta was recognized for opposing and speaking out against personal attacks on her writing, work, and political views.

To recall, Irma Baralija filed a lawsuit at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in Strasbourg for violating human rights because she cannot exercise her right to vote. The Strasbourg court ruled in her favor and ordered a change in the election law, meaning that the local elections in Mostar have to be facilitated. After all this waiting, local elections were held in Mostar after 12 years.
