United Nations (UN) Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Joyce Msuya said that the situation in the Gaza Strip, where Israeli attacks continue, is “more than hopeless”.

In an address before members of the UN Security Council, Msuya warned of the dire humanitarian situation facing Palestinian civilians in Gaza.

She repeated UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres’ deep concern about the situation in the occupied West Bank and his call for an immediate halt to all Israeli operations.

“Since October 7, 2023, we have reported more than ten times to the UN Security Council about the suffering of civilians, women, men and children,” Msuya said.

She reminded that news about the abuse of Palestinian detainees in Israel is becoming more frequent.

Msuya also pointed out that UN humanitarian workers are “faced with an unprecedented challenge” due to Israel’s various obstructions.

She emphasized that the events in the Gaza Strip over the past 11 months have called into question the world’s commitment to the international legal order designed to prevent just such tragedies.

“This makes us ask ourselves: What happened to our basic sense of humanity,” Msuya said.

She warned the world once again that civilians in the Gaza Strip are hungry, thirsty, sick and homeless.
