The White House indicated that Israeli attacks on Iran should end the two countries’ direct attacks on each other, while warning Tehran of the consequences if it responds. A senior White House official said the administration believes the Israeli operation should “shut down direct military exchanges” between Israel and Iran and that other US allies agree.
US President Joseph Biden and his national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, were kept informed throughout the attack, the official told reporters on condition of anonymity.
He added that the Israeli operation was “extensive, targeted and precise”. The official emphasized that the US was not involved in the attack.
Israel attacked military targets in Iran overnight in response to Tehran’s missile attacks earlier this month.
Iran announced that its air defense system “successfully countered Israeli attacks on military targets in Tehran, Khuzestan and Ilam provinces with limited damage in some locations.”
