theatreWith their rich repertoires, Sarajevo’s four theaters serve as popular destinations for both Sarajevans and visitors alike.

New and interesting artistic productions are regularly staged, with the participation of many reputable artists, from the region and from around the world, as well as students from the Sarajevo Academy of Performing Arts.

The Sarajevo National Theater was founded in 1919, making it the oldest theater in BiH. Serving as the country’s main theater of performing arts, its repertoire includes plays, operas, ballets and concerts by the Sarajevo Philharmonic Orchestra.

Founded in 1977, the Youth Theater has been delighting generations of Sarajevan children with its puppet shows. The theater’s repertoire currently offers many plays for youngsters, as well as for adults.

Chamber Theater 55 opened in 1955 and its repertoire is characterized by avant-garde and experimental theater productions.

Sarajevo’s newest theater, the Sarajevo War Theater (SARTR), was founded in 1992 during the Siege of Sarajevo, and today it brings together young theater workers who put on new productions every month.
