Three people were injured, one of them seriously, in the explosion at the Energetika Nova Željezara Zenica plant, which happened on Thursday around 4:25 p.m., Lejla Ekinović, spokeswoman for the Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Zenica-Doboj Canton, confirmed to Fena news agency
Minor injuries were sustained by M.M. from Prijedor and N.A. from Zenica, while M.K. from Begovo Han near Žepče, born in 1967, received more serious injuries on that occasion and was transported to the Sarajevo University Clinical Center.
An investigation team was formed, which was supposed to carry out an investigation under the supervision of the ZDK cantonal prosecutor on duty, but for security reasons, the investigation was not carried out tonight. The site of the accident has been secured and tomorrow it will be assessed whether the conditions for the investigation have been met – said spokeswoman Ekinović, who pointed out that the Centar Police Station in Zenica received a report about the explosion and the accident from the Zenica Emergency Medical Service.
According to the information given to Feni by the president of the Zenica-Doboj Canton Metal Workers’ Union, Kenan Mujkanović, a worker of Nova Željezara Zenica, Mirnes Kamerić, had serious injuries.
“Kamerić suffered severe burns while transferring gas at the Energetika plant. There was a gas ignition and an explosion,” says Mujkanović.
Nova Željezara Zenica Alena Kahrimanović, spokeswoman for the company, confirmed that today, around 4:25 p.m., in the grounds of the NŽZ complex, there was an explosion and fire “during the transfer of liquid oxygen from the tank of the company Messer – which is usual work”, but according to her information, two people were injured.
“Firefighters, police and ambulance immediately went to the scene. The fire is localized, and more will be known about the causes after the completion of the investigation. Two workers were injured. One Messer employee received minor injuries, while the NŽZ employee received more serious injuries and was transferred to KCUS for further treatment. Competent services are taking all necessary measures to determine the circumstances of the event,” spokeswoman Kahrimanović pointed out in her answer.
