US President Donald Trump agreed to extend the deadline for trade talks with the European Union (EU) until July 9, after the president of the European Commission said the bloc needed more time to reach a “good deal”.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced earlier on Sunday in a post on social networks that the EU is ready to quickly start trade negotiations with the US, but that more time is needed to reach an agreement. Von der Leyen said in a post on the X network that she had a “good” phone conversation with Trump, reports Al Jazeera.

“We had a very nice conversation and I agreed to push the deadline. She said we’ll meet very soon and see if we can work something out,” Trump said.

Trump said on Friday that he was dissatisfied with the pace of trade negotiations with the EU and threatened to impose 50 percent tariffs on all EU goods starting June 1. In early April, Trump set a 90-day deadline for trade negotiations with the EU, which is set to expire on July 9.
