Trump Proposes 100% Tariffs on Foreign Films in New Economic Plan

Trump announces 100% tariffs on foreign films: “The American film industry is dying”

The United States (U.S.) President Donald Trump announced that he will impose 100% tariffs on films produced abroad, further escalating trade disputes with countries around the world. Trump stated that he has authorized the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative to begin the procedure for introducing these measures, claiming that the film industry in the U.S. is “in rapid decline.” He named as the main culprit the “organized effort” of foreign countries to attract film productions through state subsidies and incentives, which, in his words, has also become a “threat to national security.”

If this idea is implemented, it could have devastating consequences for the U.S. film industry, a union has warned. Film studios have for years been leaving Hollywood in search of cheaper production in countries like the United Kingdom (UK)and Canada.

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick briefly commented on Trump’s statement by saying: “We’re working on it.” However, the details of Trump’s announcement remain unclear. He did not specify whether the tariffs would also apply to U.S. production companies that film outside the U.S., which is a common practice today.
