Kallas: We want a European High Representative who will bring BiH closer to the European Union

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, stated that she informed the ministers of foreign affairs of the member states about her recent visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as about current developments regarding the appointment of a new high representative.

Speaking about Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kallas emphasized that the European Union wants a European candidate to head the Office of the High Representative (OHR).

“As far as Bosnia and Herzegovina is concerned, I informed the ministers about my visit, as well as the developments regarding the appointment of a new high representative. We are determined to have a European candidate who can help bring the country closer to the European Union,” Kallas said.

She emphasized that the ultimate goal is not the permanent existence of the institution of the high representative, but the strengthening of domestic institutions and the progress of Bosnia and Herzegovina on the European path.

“The final success of the High Representative will be measured by the day when his function is no longer needed,” Kallas concluded.

Her statement comes at a time when international and domestic political circles are increasingly talking about the future of the OHR and the possible successor of the current High Representative Christian Schmidt.

The Peace Implementation Steering Committee (PIC) is scheduled to meet tomorrow with the aim of appointing a new High Representative. The previous two times European countries did not reach an agreement with the representatives of the United States of America on the name of the candidate for the high representative.

The Americans want to see Antonio Zanardi Landi as the head of the OHR after Christian Schmidt, while most European countries stood behind Rene Troccaz.
