US President Donald Trump announced on social media on Friday that he will sign a decree “ending the ridiculous promotion of paper straws” by his predecessor Joseph Biden, with the message: “BACK TO PLASTIC!”.
Trump is a climate skeptic who regularly calls the energy transition a “fraud” and has promised to encourage hydrocarbon exploitation.
Biden, a Democrat, set a goal by 2035 to end the use of single-use plastic utensils, including straws, in government departments and federal agencies.
Straws, plastic cups and cutlery are indispensable in the daily life of Americans, large consumers of drinks or take-out and fans of meal delivery.
The disposable straw became one of the first symbols of plastic pollution in the world, especially the oceans.
