The President of the United States (U.S.), Donald Trump, wants to withdraw 20.000 U.S. troops from Europe.

Italian media reported two days ago that Trump plans to reduce the U.S. military presence in Europe by about 20 percent, or 20.000 troops, as part of a review of Washington’s commitment to protecting Europe.

Citing an unnamed diplomatic source, Italian media reported that Trump wants European countries to provide financial contributions for the U.S. troops that remain so that this cost will no longer be borne solely by U.S. taxpayers.

In July 2020, during his first term, Trump announced that the U.S. would withdraw 12.000 troops from Germany in response to Berlin’s failure to meet NATO defense spending targets.

In February 2021, U.S. President Joe Biden formally suspended the planned withdrawal of U.S. troops from Germany.

Approximately 100.000 U.S. troops are stationed across Europe.
