Turkey refuses to allow NATO to participate in the War in Ukraine

Turkey refuses that NATO “participate” in the war in Ukraine, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said yesterday after the informal meeting of the heads of diplomacy of the Alliance in Prague.

“We support the continuation of aid to Ukraine and Ukraine’s capacity to provide deterrence, but we do not want NATO to participate in that war,” said the Turkish foreign minister.

For Turkey, it is one thing to support Ukraine to guarantee its territorial integrity and liberate its territory, but it is another thing to involve NATO in the war. According to Minister Fidan, this risks leading to regional expansion of conflicts and larger crises.

Turkey has managed to maintain ties with both Russia and Ukraine since the conflict began in February 2022.

Turkey expressed this position at a time when several NATO countries, including the United States (U.S.), authorized Ukraine to use the weapons they gave it to attack Russia if it defends itself against attacks. U.S. President Joe Biden gave the green light to Ukraine to target targets on Russian territory, in the Kharkiv region, under certain conditions, N1 writes.
