Uk: All Old Trams Withdrawn from Traffic Following Safety Concerns

The Prime Minister of Sarajevo Canton, who resigned, Nihad Uk, addressed the public at a press conference. He said that this morning all the old trams that are technically correct were withdrawn from traffic.

“None of them will be put into traffic until the public sees the results of the analysis and certification of all those trams,” he said.

Uk said that within 72 hours after the accident, he was at the scene, visited the injured in the Clinical Center and had a series of meetings, and at the same time he followed the protests where his resignation was demanded.

“These were not people who were brought into our capital by buses and given daily wages and sandwiches. They came to show respect and dissatisfaction with the government. I heard that. They also called for my resignation. That’s the only reason I gave it, to show that they can be heard. My resignation is not running away, it’s taking responsibility,” said Uk, adding that he will stay until a new government is established.

“I promise you that not a single process in Canton Sarajevo will stop. Everything will continue,” he emphasized.

He says he has submitted a request for immediate and deep changes in GRAS.

“It is obvious that the process of transforming GRAS into a more modern company that serves citizens in a safer way must be accelerated. The transformation of this company and its internal processes is something that has been neglected due to huge investments and stabilization monetary interventions, and that is the fault of my government,” he said.

When asked if he resigned to protect the Minister of Transport Adnan Šteta, he said that he did not want to save anyone with his action, but that the decision was a political responsibility to the citizens.
