Unique Team in BiH rescuing Lives: Doctors from Tuzla perform Brain Surgeries “without a Scalpel”

Experts in the field of emergency neuroradiology, Haris Huseinagic and Mirza Moranjkic, from the University Clinical Center (UCC) in Tuzla are achieving extraordinary results at the global level. With contemporary methods and without a classic surgical approach, this duo successfully cures brain blood disorders, and their work is largely appreciated outside the BiH.

Huseinagic and Moranjkic performed more than 400 complex brain surgical procedures in the past four years without a classic surgical approach on patients who were very close to death.

“In the first place, we are treating aneurysms, that is, the expansion of the blood vessels in the brain that often rapture and usually cause massive bleeding in the brain. Aneurysms are considered as a life-threatening illness. Moreover, we are also treating arteriovenous malformations, which represent congenital developmental disorder of blood vessels in the brain, and they are most commonly found in younger people, and manifested through brain bleeding,” said Mirza Moranjkic, the Head of the Division for Endovascular Neurosurgery at the Clinic for Neurosurgery in the UCC Tuzla.

They added that it is very rare to find a team made by a neurosurgeon and a neuroradiologist, which brings special benefits to their patients.

“You can’t find a neurosurgeon and neuroradiologist working together nowhere in the Balkans, or in Europe, and they are mostly considered as a competition. However, that is not the case in Tuzla, because we are working together and choosing the method that exclusively depends on the clinical and radiological condition of the patient, illness etc.,” stated Moranjkic.

“These procedures are very complex. We developed at least two innovations in the process so far and the reason why they are inviting us to present our work all over the world is because it is very unusual,” said Huseinagic.

Patients outside of our country also put their trust in this team of experts from Tuzla.

This specific duo from BiH stated that they can, know and want to pass their knowledge to their younger colleagues in BiH, and noted that they need support from the wider community as well.
