United Nations SC adopted Resolution demanding an “immediate and prolonged pause” in the Conflict in Gaza

The United Nations Security Council adopted a draft resolution demanding an “immediate and prolonged pause” in the conflict in Gaza.

The draft resolution submitted by Malta in the VSUN was voted on in an emergency session. The draft law was accepted with 12 “yes” and three “abstentions” out of a total of 15 members. The United States of America (USA), Russia and Great Britain abstained.

On the other hand, the Security Council rejected the Russian amendment proposal to include the term “ceasefire” instead of “humanitarian pause”.

The resolution calls for an “immediate and prolonged humanitarian pause in the conflict” instead of a humanitarian ceasefire and the establishment of a corridor in the Gaza Strip in accordance with international humanitarian law.

The resolution further states that the intervals in question should have a “sufficient number of days” in accordance with international humanitarian law and calls for unhindered, quick and safe access to humanitarian aid provided by the UN and its partners.

The decision calls for the release of all hostages, especially children, from the hands of Hamas and other groups, and calls for an end to the supply of basic necessities to the civilian population in Gaza.
