UNRWA Chief: Israel is using Hunger as a Weapon

Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), stated that famine is likely to occur in northern Gaza, which has been under Israeli military siege for over a month.

“The state of Israel is using hunger as a weapon. Unfortunately, it’s not surprising; famine in northern Gaza is possible,” Lazzarini said.

He emphasized that this situation deprives Palestinians in Gaza of their basic needs, including food essential for survival.

“The aid allowed into the Gaza Strip is insufficient. The average is just over 30 trucks daily, which meets only six percent of the daily needs,” he added.

Lazzarini stressed that political decisions must be made to ensure regular and unhindered passage of aid trucks to northern Gaza.

The latest report from the UN’s Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) states that the likelihood of famine in northern Gaza is imminent.
