papa_spomenikThe monument to Pope John Paul II will be unveiled today on the square in front of the Sarajevo Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, in honor of his peace mission to B&H.

The project of erecting a monument to the Pope was initiated by the Croatian Cultural Society ‘Napredak’ and the Vrhbosna Archishopric, and dates back to 2007, with the goal to have it devoted not only to Catholics, but to all people of good will in B&H.

The monument to the Pope is 3 meters high, with 12 cubic meters of space and is made out of a silver material, which is more stable and of higher quality than the previously planned bronze.

Young sculptor Hrvoje Urumović, who was born in Sarajevo and resides in Zagreb, thought of the solution to this.

A large number of officials from the political, cultural, religious and public life in B&H is expected to attend the ceremony of the unveiling of the monument.

Pope John Paul II visited B&H two times-Sarajevo on 12 and 13 April 1997 and Banja Luka on 22 June 2003.

He spoke about B&H 263 times in his speeches, and recognized B&H one month after the referendum was held.
