US President Joseph Biden declared the Houthis a “terrorist” group after US and British warplanes, ships and submarines carried out dozens of airstrikes across Yemen last night.
Biden said Washington would respond to the Houthis if they continued what he called outrageous behavior.
Lt. Gen. Douglas Sims, director of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the US and Britain had struck close to 30 sites in Yemen and that more than 150 rounds of munitions had been used.
He told reporters that he did not expect a large number of victims in those attacks, since the targets also included those in rural areas.
London and Washington say their airstrikes in Yemen, where most of the territory is controlled by the Houthis, were in retaliation for the movement’s attacks on ships in the Red Sea.
The Iran-backed Houthis carried out the attacks on the ships in response to Israel’s war in Gaza against Hamas.
