Today, the European Commission supported the idea of giving Ukraine candidate status for membership in the European Union. The idea of Moldova’s membership was also supported, but not Georgia’s, while the idea of granting that status to Bosnia and Herzegovina was not discussed.
European Commissioner for Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi, answering the question why Bosnia and Herzegovina was not discussed, said that BiH must meet 14 priorities.
“When it comes to the candidate status of Bosnia and Herzegovina, it is also leading its accession process. It is a merit-based process and it has been underlined by the President and applied to each individual candidate country. Bosnia and Herzegovina must meet the 14 priorities set out in our opinion endorsed by the European Council,” he explained.
“We are still waiting for the country to fulfill it. If we renegotiate the conditions that are clearly stated, then we would soften the accession process and that is something we will not do,” said Varhelyi.
