Von der Leyen clarified in Belgrade when Kosovo will be considered “de facto recognized”

The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, said on Tuesday, after a meeting with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, that Serbia knows its obligations, but also that it knows what it cannot do contrary to its constitution.

Vučić told reporters after the meeting that he repeated the position he recently expressed in Brussels, at a meeting with the leaders of European countries, to the president of the European Commission.

“Serbia is committed to preserving peace and stability. Serbia knows its obligations and will fulfill its obligations in accordance with the agreements,” said the Serbian president, as reported by the Beta agency.

He stated that Serbia has long informed all partners about its position and what it can and cannot fulfill, stressing that Serbia’s position remains the same.

“We know, let me repeat once more, what Serbia accepted, and what we talked about, discussed and reached conclusions in the Serbian Parliament, and accordingly we will behave responsibly and seriously in fulfilling our obligations,” said Vučić.

He added that Serbia will fulfill its obligations, “expecting that some others will fulfill their obligations, which they should have fulfilled 11 years ago”.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that Serbia should start implementing the agreements reached in the dialogue with Kosovo, and that Kosovo should establish the Union of Serbian Municipalities, stressing that this is a necessary prerequisite for the European path.

At a joint press conference with the President of Serbia, she said that the violent attack on September 24 in the north of Kosovo was unacceptable and that the perpetrators must be brought to justice and held accountable.

The President of the European Commission did not repeat that Serbia must accept the de facto recognition of Kosovo, which she stated yesterday in Pristina, but in response to a journalist’s question, she said that it was about the implementation of the Ohrid Agreement.

“The agreement foresees various steps that include the recognition of documents and institutions by Serbia, and on the other hand, it goes along with the establishment of the Association of Municipalities with a Serbian majority, which Kosovo needs to realize. This will pave the way to the normalization of relations between Serbia and Kosovo and is a necessary prerequisite for the European path.” Von der Leyen said.

She reiterated that the enlargement process, which is at the top of the EU’s agenda, is based on merit and that both the EU and the candidate countries should prepare for enlargement in order to take advantage of the existing momentum, Fena reports.
