The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, said today that the body of Ratko Mladić, a war criminal convicted of genocide in Srebrenica, has been retrieved and should arrive in Serbia today.
“I received information that the body has been taken over and should arrive in Serbia in the late afternoon,” said Vučić.
Mladić’s death reopened the question of Serbia’s relationship with the former commander of the Republika Srpska Army and a legally convicted war criminal.
“We will be there to provide all kinds of logistical and transport support and to preserve public order, peace and security,” added Vučić.
He also said that Mladić’s son will tell the public in the coming hours or days what the family wants to do.
“This is very difficult to secure and to guarantee the safety of everyone and will be very important, given the estimates of the BIA, the Military Security Agency and the Ministry of Interior, which are in the tens of thousands of people present. We have to secure everyone. Our services have a demanding job ahead of them and we will use everything to ensure that,” Vučić stressed, without specifying exactly where Mladić will be buried.
War criminal Ratko Mladić died in prison on August 27 at the age of 85.
Mladić was the commander of the Army of Republika Srpska during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague has finally sentenced him to life imprisonment for genocide, crimes against humanity and violations of the laws and customs of war committed during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
