War Criminal Jovica Stanisic To Serve The Remainder Of His Sentence In Germany

The President of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT), Judge Graciela Gatti Santana, has issued an order determining the country in which war criminal Jovica Stanisic will serve the remainder of his sentence.

Graciela Gatti Santana took into account that the Federal Republic of Germany is willing to assist the Mechanism in the enforcement of Stanisic’s sentence and decided that Germany would be designated as the country in which Stanisic will serve the remainder of his sentence.

The former head of the State Security Directorate (SDB) of Serbia, Jovica Stanisic, was sentenced in 2023 to 15 years in prison for crimes in seven municipalities in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), including participation in a joint criminal enterprise.

With this verdict, Stanisic and Franko Simatovic became the first two Serbian officials convicted of crimes in BiH.

Simatovic and Stanisic were convicted by a second-instance and final verdict for crimes in Bijeljina, Zvornik, Doboj, Trnovo, Bosanski Samac, and Sanski Most.

“I instruct the Registrar to submit an official request to the Government of Germany for the enforcement of Stanisic’s sentence and, if the Government of Germany accepts this request, to inform Stanisic and the relevant authorities in the Netherlands, and take all necessary measures to transfer him to Germany as expeditiously as possible,” stated Graciela Gatti Santana.

She ordered that Stanisic remain in the Mechanism’s detention while awaiting transfer to Germany.
