What are the most popular Occupations in BiH?

Based on data published by institutions responsible for the domestic labor market (entity employment bureaus, cantonal employment services and the Employment Bureau of the Brcko District of BiH), and according to the number of published ads, it is evident that the situation with surplus and deficit occupations is similar for several years.

“When it comes to highly educated persons (VSS), the most sought-after titles are those related to the IT sector (IT engineer, software engineer), then electrical engineer, civil engineer, graduate pharmacist, doctor of medicine-specialist. In addition to these titles, graduate economists and lawyers are also in demand in terms of the number of advertisements, but due to the hyperproduction of this staff, most of them are on the unemployment records. Besides economists and lawyers, the largest number of unemployed highly educated people is still among criminals, political scientists, journalists, and social workers. Also, there are a large number of English language teachers and primary school teachers,” says Muamer Bandic, director of the BiH Agency for Labor and Employment.

He added that the greatest demand for workers with secondary education (SSS) is for salesmen and caterers, especially trained waiters, and data entry operators and workers in call centers are still in demand. Of the persons with secondary education, the most unemployed are economic technicians, mechanical technicians, high school graduates, nurses and agricultural technicians.

“When it comes to workers with skilled qualifications, the most sought after are welders, carpenters, locksmiths. It should be taken into account here that the need for some of these occupations is far greater than some others. On the other hand, the most unemployed with high and skilled qualifications are salesmen, locksmiths, car mechanics, hairdressers,” Bandic added.

The end of the school year, Bandic reminded, is the time when high school and high school graduates must decide on continuing their education and choosing a future profession. Therefore, in this period, there is an increased public interest in data on labor market needs, and in accordance with these needs, we have again prepared data on deficit and surplus occupations, said Bandic.

Choosing a profession is one of the most important decisions that graduates need to make in life and therefore they need to be very careful when making that decision.

”As every year, we are here to facilitate their decision and provide quality information that can help them choose a profession. As last year, we tried to further improve the information from the labor market, so that all those interested can see in detail, by occupation, how many people are unemployed, and how many people in a particular profession were employed in the previous year. This information was presented for each canton in the Federation of BiH, for both entities and for the Brcko District of BiH. Also, as always, at the level of Bosnia and Herzegovina, we have given an overview of the 5 most numerous occupations on the records of unemployed persons,” said Bandic.
