Members of the Women of Srebrenica Association held a peaceful protest in Tuzla today, continuing their long-standing fight for truth and justice, demanding the discovery of the remains of their loved ones and the prosecution of those responsible for the crimes.
On the eve of the 31st anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, as highlighted, preparations have already begun for this year’s collective funeral at the Potočari Memorial Center, while the families of the victims are still waiting for answers about the remaining mass graves and the number of victims who will be buried this year.
The president of the association, Nura Begović, emphasized the importance of cooperation with the Institute for Missing Persons of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also pointed out the painful identification processes.
“We are interested in the graves. Even for those that are marked, we are demanding urgent exhumations. Every bone, every part of the body that has not yet been found hurts us. Often these are just fragments, but we will not give up until the last part of our loved ones finds peace,” said Begović.
The process of reassociation, or the subsequent addition of found remains to already buried victims, was particularly highlighted, with an appeal to families to decide on burial even in cases of incomplete skeletons.
“We understand the pain, but the years pass and we must ensure that our loved ones are buried with dignity while there are still those who will complete this process,” added Begović.
She also criticized political structures, emphasizing that crimes must not be denied or relativized, and that the judiciary must do its job.
Today’s protest was attended by students, as well as citizens from several cities, which, as stated, gives the survivors the strength to continue the fight.
The peaceful walk ended with a religious program and a prayer for the victims, with the message that the gatherings will continue every 11th of the month, until justice is served and until all victims find peace.
