What is Bosnia and Herzegovina for the International Community?

Everything that has been done so far on the European path of Bosnia and Herzegovina is mainly the result of pressure from the international community, because politicians in Bosnia and Herzegovina can hardly come to an agreement on their own. It is the same now.

The position of Bosnia and Herzegovina on the stabilization and association process for the Brussels meeting was adopted after the visit of the director of the European Union’s Foreign Affairs Service, Angelina Eichorst. Thus, representatives from both entities met for the first time to discuss the European path after BiH received candidate status. We researched – can we move forward without international interventionism?

“Threats to state institutions from Milorad Dodik are dangerous and undermine Dayton, the European election and the prosperity of all citizens in Bosnia and Herzegovina.”, Gabrijel Escobar, October 2021.

And on July 18 of this year, he said the following: “Milorad Dodik remains focused on undermining the Dayton Peace Agreement and the state constitution.”

“I don’t want to talk about sanctions yet, but I want to say that there are conditions for us. I’m talking about a large amount of our taxpayers’ money,” Weber said in February last year.

And this is Matthew Palmer’s statement from November 29, 2021. “We want to help the political parties to reach an agreement, we want to enable that agreement to be reached”.

Is it optimistic to say that Bosnia and Herzegovina do politicians have a constructive spirit, if we take into account the statements of representatives of the international community from the previous period? Same actors – same messages. Support for sovereignty, territorial integrity and the path to the European Union also came from the special representative for the Western Balkans Stuart Peach, Manuel Sarazin, the special ambassador of Germany for the Western Balkans, as well as the high representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina Christian Schmidt.

“The MPs left the institutions of Bosnia and Herzegovina, including this House, this most important body for the waste of laws, at the very moment when the much-needed reform regulation should be discussed and created, which would move the country forward on the road to the European Union,” said the high representative on October 28, 2020.

Half a year after receiving candidate status – our representatives went to Brussels with the hope that the progress of Bosnia and Herzegovina in fulfilling the 14 priorities from the Opinion of the European Commission will be recognized. Consistent application of the Stabilization and Association Agreement, as written in the document. Do the citizens also feel this consistency, and who is responsible for the crisis in Bosnia and Herzegovina?

“We have a global political realignment on the scene, which is very well felt in this sensitive area, but on the other hand, domestic political actors are the ones who have responsibility in the eyes of our people, and I think that regardless of all that, they should find some kind of common path if we want to build a stable society,” believes political scientist Danijel Vidović.

“When it comes specifically to the political elite in the Republika Srpska, Milorad Dodik as the leader, conditionally speaking the alpha and omega of the political elite in the Republika Srpska – he is an exceptional political entrepreneur – if there is no work, the entrepreneur creates work, if there is no political situation he creates it, cooks it up by creating tensions and crises and then sets himself up as someone who will solve that crisis. The proposals that the Republika Srpska sent to the European Union are proof of that,” says political scientist Mladen Bubonjić.
