Today marks the 32nd anniversary of the first massacre at the Markale market, when 68 people were killed and 142 were wounded from the explosion of a mortar shell fired from a position of the Army of Republika Srpska.
On the occasion of the commemoration of February 5, the Day of Remembrance of all killed and wounded citizens of Sarajevo in the period 1992-1995. survivors, families of those killed, officials and citizens of Sarajevo laid flowers on the memorial on the Markale market.
After the laying of flowers, a joint commemorative session of the Sarajevo Canton Assembly, the Sarajevo City Council and the municipal councils from the Sarajevo Canton will be held in the Sarajevo National Theatre, announced the Protocol and Press Service of the Sarajevo Canton.
“That day, I came to Markale to buy something for the children. I was badly wounded. I heard screams. They took me to the hospital where I stayed for a month,” Banda recalled on the anniversary of the commemoration of the Day of Remembrance for all the killed and wounded citizens of Sarajevo from 1992 to 1995 and the 32nd anniversary of the massacre at Sarajevo’s Markale market.
Even though decades have passed, it’s hard to remember those days, he still lives it all today and the memories don’t fade.
“It can never be forgotten,” he added.

In 2007, the Assembly of Sarajevo Canton made a decision to declare February 5 as the Day of Remembrance for all citizens who died during the period 1992-1995.
The Markale market and closed market in the old part of Sarajevo were shelled twice during the siege of the city. After February 1994, in a massacre at the very end of the war, on August 28, 1995, near the Markale City Market, 43 civilians were killed and 84 wounded.
