On the occasion of the pronouncement of the first instance verdict for Radovan Karadžić in the length of 40 years in prison, the Chairman of the Presidency of BiH Bakir Izetbegović held a press conference commenting on the verdict, saying that what matters is that Karadžić is convicted for almost everything he was charged with.
“What makes this verdict significant is the fact that it is a verdict pronounced to one ideology and policy. There is only one truth about the war in BiH. We believe and we hope that this injustice will be made right by the appeals chamber,” Izetbegović highlighted.
Izetbegović said that the verdict is important for the victims, for BiH, and for the region as well.
“With this verdict, the civilized world demonstrated that it understands the suffering of people in BiH during the war in BiH. The verdict is important for the region as well, in order for everyone to face the truth, with the aim of building a better future,” Izetbegović said.
Izetbegović urged that the verdict is not politicized, so that everyone would benefit from it. Furthermore, Izetbegović added that relations in the region must be built on the foundations of truth and justice.
“The important thing here is that the verdict was pronounced for almost everything that has been done. However, it is confusing that some generals, to whom Karadžić was superior, were sentenced to life, while the supreme commandant of the army and the former president of Republika Srpska got 40 years in prison,” Izetbegović concluded.
