Bosnia and Herzegovina, i.e. its Chairman of the Presidency, Denis Bećirović, once again presented himself before the United Nations with an inconsistent presentation before the General Assembly. To this practice should be added the presence of the member of the Presidency from the RS Željka Cvijanović on the margins of the assembly of the world organization and the messages that deviate from Bećirović’s statement.
Destructive forces, as Bećirović called the holders of political power in Republika Srpska, have been trying to stop the progress of Bosnia and Herzegovina and its development into a modern European state with obstructions and blockades since the end of the war.
“They are slowing down our path to a modern European state, but they cannot stop it. Today, BiH is at the door of the EU and NATO. These are our strategic goals, which were unanimously defined by the state authorities of BiH,” Becirovic said.
There is a gap in Bećirović’s words, says political analyst Tanja Topić. Euroscepticism has been growing stronger since BiH received candidate status for EU membership from Republika Srpska. The political coalition, which is at the end of its mandate, did not provide money from the Growth Plan, nor did it appoint a chief negotiator as proof of commitment to European integration.
“If these are the arguments you use to support the thesis that there is a clear path and the agreement of all institutions in Bosnia and Herzegovina to move towards the EU, then to me it looks like mere deception, not only to the international but also to the domestic public,” Topic said.
Topić believes that the impact of the stay of the member of the BiH Presidency from the RS in America should not be ignored, as well as the meeting of Željka Cvijanović with Donald Trump’s chief of staff. The picture sent from the headquarters of the United Nations about internal differences in the conduct of foreign policy will not be changed.
“Members of the Presidency have been playing the same game throughout their mandates, and they accepted that game from the foreigners who were the godfathers of such a three-headed body. As long as this is the case and as long as they are ready to throw the ball of nationalism at each other, this situation will not change, and this is especially evident during the pre-election period,” journalist Raljic says.
Both members of the Presidency attended the dinner hosted by US President Trump on the occasion of the UN General Assembly. On this occasion, Cvijanović emphasized that she remains dedicated to further strengthening relations with the USA based on, as she said, the balanced approach of the Trump administration towards all peoples in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
