Croatian writer and columnist Vedrana Rudan has died at the age of 77, her official Facebook page announced.

“Vedrana has gone to the area without signal,” her official page posted, which features a cover photo with television colors and the caption ‘No signal’.

Vedrana Rudan was born on October 29, 1949 in Opatija. She graduated from the Pedagogical Academy in Rijeka with a degree in Croatian and German. She worked as a teacher and tourist guide, and then as a journalist for several Croatian newspapers. She was also an editor at Croatian Radio and a television show host.

She began her literary career with the novel “Ear, Throat, Knife”, published in 2002. She subsequently published a series of novels and other books, including “Love at Last Sight”, “I, the Unbeliever”, “Blacks in Florence”, “May Your Mother Give You Birth”, “The Skeletons of Madison County”, “In the Land of Blood and Idiots”, “Why I Swear”, “The Man in the Throat”, “Vanilla Pudding” and “Life Sentence”.

Her books have been translated into several foreign languages, and her works have been adapted into plays.

For years, she also wrote on the blog “How to Die Without Stress”, in which she commented on social and political topics and her own life experiences. She was known for her direct and polemical style, which often provoked strong reactions and public debates.

She has spoken publicly about her illness since 2024. In March 2025, she said that she was suffering from very aggressive bile duct cancer, which metastasized after surgery.

In an interview with HRT in March 2025, she also spoke about her own death, saying that she wanted it to be understood as “going to an area without a signal.”
