WWF welcomes the decision of the Parliament of the Federation of BiH to suspend the Construction of small Hydropower Plants

WWF welcomes the decision of the House of Representatives of the Parliament of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which yesterday adopted the proposed law amending the Law on Electricity in the Federation of BiH. The reasons for the amendments are related to the conclusion of the House from June 2020 on the ban on the construction of small hydropower plants throughout the FBiH and to the Proposal of the Declaration on River Protection.

Together with other organizations in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region, WWF has been advocating for years to stop the construction of small hydropower plants, as their construction and operational work have proven to be a terrible blow to rivers and the natural world. In their efforts to slow down or stop this unfavorable situation in terms of nature and the environment, for many years now, organizations have been facing obstacles, but also victories.

“The adoption of this law is one of the victories in this process. Representatives of the highest authorities accepted the initiative of non-governmental organizations to stop further construction of small hydropower plants, which ultimately shows that we are well on our way to recognizing this problem as very important and influential, “said Đorđe Stefanović, Director of WWF Adria in BiH.

Through the process initiated by non-governmental organizations and local communities directly affected by the problem of small hydropower plants, communication with the authorities was established, which ultimately resulted in the adoption of this law.
