The absence of environmental awareness and the numerous wild landfills in Gorazde were the motivation for sixteen-year-old Runi Baker, a first-year student at the “Enver Pozderovic” Mixed Secondary School, to start the process of designing the first application in the area of Bosnian-Podrinje Canton (BPC) Gorazde, but also in the wider region, which aims to recycle waste.
He managed to design and create the recikliraj.ba application, through which he wants to contribute to raising awareness about the need to recycle waste.
“Through the application, citizens will be able to get all the necessary information. On the home page, we have three categories – the first is the waste category in which it is clearly specified in which bins which types of waste are disposed of (blue, green, and yellow). The second category shows the locations where the recycling bins will be placed, and the third explains the exact meaning of the markings that we can see on the packaging of various items,” says Baker.
Moreover, he notes that he worked on the application for about a month and hopes that it will soon be available to the public.
“It all started from a competition where I had the idea to create an application that would inform citizens about recycling, but, unfortunately, that project did not pass in that competition. After that, I decided to make some change to the project and to expand it not only through the application but also to install recycling bins in the city. I am currently working on the final activities and the application will be available soon. We will place a dozen recycling bins and citizens will be able to find out where they are after installing the application. We are trying to implement the project with the help of the World Vision organization and I hope we will succeed,” he pointed out.
Baker emphasized that by destroying nature, unscrupulous citizens endanger the future, and believes that everyone can contribute to prevent this.
“We are currently planning to recycle plastic and paper, and in the foreseeable future maybe glass, but I think this is a good start. In the area of the city of Gorazde, there are dozens of illegal landfills that bother all nature lovers, and it is urgently necessary to change the awareness of citizens. I would like us to make a change and start at least pioneering steps in recycling,” concludes the young eco-activist Runi Baker, who is currently working on creating a plan on how to remove and recycle collected waste in Gorazde, Fena reports.
