Today is the International Day of people with disabilities. On the occasion of this day the Institute for youth development KULT and students of more than 20 NGOs throughout B&H, within the program Strengthening institutional capacity of USAID’s partners in B&H, have decided to draw attention to the situation and problems that people with disabilities face every day.
“Marking this day not only intends to raise awareness about the benefits of integration of people with disability in all aspects, political, economic and cultural life, but also their real and concrete involvement in social processes”, stated KULT.
In B&H there is not yet accurate data on the number of persons with disabilities, which indicates a lack of interest on the needs of this group. The B&H Agency for Statistics based on the data received from the social work services PIO/MIO funds estimates that more than 270.000 citizens from both entities have some form of disability.
According to B&H law, persons that are entitled to rights guaranteed for persons with disabilities are those people who were born or acquired during their lives some form of disability such as hearing loss, visual impairment, physical disability, intellectual disability, autism and mental impairment.
The initiative “No barriers!” will include an analysis of the accessibility of major structures in B&H that will be revealed through Facebook. The aim is to reveal socially irresponsible public institutions, companies and etc.
The Institute for youth development KULT implements the USAID program strengthening the capacity of organizations.
