Vjetrenica Cave, one of the most attractive caves in the entire BiH, was visited by around 15,000 tourists last year, according to acting director of the PE Vjetrenica, Niksa Vuletic.

He also added that they are satisfied with the number of visits, but that there is room for further increase and that he is hoping that this growth will be achieved through the establishment of cooperation with the new tourist agencies that will include visits to Vjetrenica in their offers.

According to him, they are planning better protection of caves and biodiversity, work on the candidacy in UNESCO, as well as re-categorization of the cave in compliance with the International Union for Conservation of Nature, as well as some new contents that should attract more visitors.

Moreover, they are planning cooperation with other protected areas and tourist destinations in our country and abroad, but also with the academic community, primary and high schools through the organization of little school of speleology.

Vuletic also recalled that Vjetrenica Cave is located in the Municipality of Ravno, in a low populated area of southern Herzegovina. He added that the promotion and adequate support from the relevant institutions have crucial significance for the development of touristic potential of this destination.

Vjetrenica is one of the longest caves in BiH with more than 7,000 meters of underground channels and passages. Its main speleological characteristics include spacious corridors and halls and a rich hydrographic world with numerous lakes, several waterfalls, several streams and multiple smaller periodic flows.

Vjetrenica Cave has rich cave world with around 200 different animal species, which makes it the first in the world by its biodiversity, and a total of 37 of them were found and described at this location for the very first time.
