Increased Number of Visitors to the ‘Tunnel of Salvation’ in Sarajevo

The summer months represent the peak of the tourist season, which is reflected in the attendance at the Memorial Complex Tunnel “D-B” in Sarajevo, known as the “Tunnel of salvation”. During this period, we note a significant increase in the number of visitors, especially among Bosnians and Herzegovinians who use the summer vacation to return to their homeland and visit the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, announced the Sarajevo Memorial Center.

They emphasize that the Tunnel of Salvation is an unavoidable destination, and this trend is accompanied by an increase in tourist arrivals from the countries of the Middle East, the Republic of Turkey, the Balkan region, as well as from Western Europe and the Far East.

One of the main attractions for visitors is the tunnel tube itself, which during the siege of Sarajevo represented a key link with the rest of the world.

“Entering the tunnel, which was a salvation for the residents of besieged Sarajevo, provides visitors with a strong emotional experience and an unforgettable memory that they take with them,” the Sarajevo Memorial Center states.

The revitalized segment of the tunnel, a 130-meter section opened two years ago, is the last infrastructural undertaking realized in the Complex.

The Sarajevo Memorial Center states that preparatory work is underway for the restoration of the original entrance and the initial section of the 25-meter tunnel.

“It is planned that in September, on the Dobrinja side of the Complex, the Educational Center, the construction of which was recently completed, will be opened. We hope that the procedural aspects will work in our favor in order to realize all the activities according to the plan”, they point out.

They also emphasize that the educational workshops held in the Tunnel “D-B” Memorial Complex attracted a significant number of young visitors.

“A total of 6,078 people went through these programs, including 5,710 pupils, students and 368 teachers. These activities enable young people to get to know historical facts and the importance of the Tunnel of salvation for Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina through an interactive approach,” say the Sarajevo Memorial Center.

They say that Tunnel “D-B” remains an important destination for everyone who wants to learn more about the recent history of Sarajevo, but also a place where memories are evoked and emotions about the difficult days of the siege are evoked.

The Sarajevo Memorial Center invited all those interested to visit the “D-B” Tunnel and experience this unique part of our history, Fena writes.
