One of the most beautiful caves in Bosnia and Herzegovina(BiH), Vjetrenica, has a new tourist offer starting this season.
It is about a kind of underground adventure to the Great Lake(Veliko Jezero), an area that until now has not been open to visitors and which until now only a few have had the opportunity to see.
The maximum number
Although all the conditions for this route have been met, crossing to the Great Lake is only possible in July and August due to the high water level.
Niksa Vuletic, director of JP “Vjetrenica”, told that they already had a trial, free tour of six people, which will actually be the maximum number.
He emphasized that it is not a classic visit to the cave, since the visitors must be prepared to cross the boats to the lake itself in special equipment, with helmets, lamps, rubber boots, but also safety vests and warm jackets.
”The tour to the Great Lake is 1.300 meters long, which is 2.600 meters in both directions, and we will organize it upon announcement. Tours to the hidden world of Vjetrenice are, of course, organized with professional guides, and the lake itself is crossed by boat with a maximum of three people. Of course, if, I repeat, the water level is favorable for crossing the lake. Because the siphon is still under water, so our first guests on this route still got wet,” explained Vuletic.
Endemic species
As of yesterday, applications for the tour to the lake are open, and all details can be found on the website of JP “Vjetrenica”. Namely, it is planned to do eight tours per month.
Vuletic particularly emphasized that this new offer does not endanger the cave in any way and reminded that through the last inventory and mapping project a total of 230 species were discovered, which, as he stated, ranks Vjetrenica first in terms of richness and biodiversity of cave fauna.
Namely, Vjetrenica is unique in Europe in terms of endemic species and is the home of the human fish (olm).
Driving on the “Cira Railway”
In JP “Vjetrenica” they arranged the outer part of the track, and in cooperation with the City Administration of Trebinje, they also acquired bicycles that all guests can use for free and ride the “Cira’s railway“. For now, they have a total of 10 bikes, Avaz writes.
