German police detained a person in the city of Halle on suspicion of preparing a terrorist attack with an extreme right-wing background, German media reported on Wednesday.
“During the search of the arrested person’s apartment, we found materials that indicate that the arrested person has contempt for people who do not fit in with his worldviews,” State Attorney Denis Cernota told the MDR public service.
The State Attorney’s Office announced that the 36-year-old man was detained over the weekend after he shouted racist slogans from the window of his apartment and threatened with a weapon. On that occasion, an explosive device that was “ready for use” was found.
“We start from the fact that the suspect intended to kill and injure other people with this device,” the attorney’s office said.
The police are currently investigating whether the suspect acted alone or as part of a right-wing extremist group.
As MDR further reports, the neighborhood of Hale, where the suspect lived, is known for the tensions between the natives and immigrants from Africa.
