70th Anniversary: NATO to continue to provide Assistance to BiH’s Institutions

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) marks the anniversary of the 70th anniversary of its existence, making it the most long-standing military organization at the international scene.

NATO Headquarters Sarajevo, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the NATO Alliance, underlines the continued commitment of NATO to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“The Alliance has been supporting reforms for years and helping build the capabilities that will be of use to all citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina,” NATO Headquarters said in Sarajevo.

Through the activities of NATO Staff of Sarajevo, the Alliance will continue to cooperate and provide assistance to the BiH Ministry of Defense and the Armed Forces of BiH and other BiH institutions in their work on tasks in accordance with the Partnership for Peace, focusing on the daily reforms.

NATO Foreign Ministers gathered in Washington D.C.’s Mellon Auditorium on Wednesday (3 April 2019), to celebrate 70 years of the transatlantic Alliance. The ceremony, hosted by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, took place in the same room where the Foreign Ministers of the 12 founding Allies met to sign the North Atlantic Treaty on 4 April 1949. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg hailed the Treaty, saying: “its reach is vast, and it has stood the test of time – because we have united around our core commitment to protect and defend one another”.

Security in our daily lives is key to our well-being. NATO’s purpose is to guarantee the freedom and security of its members through political and military means.

NATO promotes democratic values and enables members to consult and cooperate on defence and security-related issues to solve problems, build trust and, in the long run, prevent conflict.

NATO is committed to the peaceful resolution of disputes. If diplomatic efforts fail, it has the military power to undertake crisis-management operations. These are carried out under the collective defence clause of NATO’s founding treaty – Article 5 of the Washington Treaty or under a United Nations mandate, alone or in cooperation with other countries and international organisations.
