B&H director, Jasmila Žbanić, is planning to make a movie about the Srebrenica genocide in 1995, in which more than 8,000 men, boys, Bosniaks, were killed. Filming of the movie should start in fall 2016.
Žbanić already wrote the screenplay for the movie, and she provided the funding through the program „Creative Europe. “ Filming should cost around 4.5 million EUR.
“It is a very difficult topic,” said Žbanić, explaining that the movie will be based on the true story of an interpreter Hasan Nuhanović, who witnessed the attack of Bosnian Serbs in July 1995, on the UN protected zone in Srebrenica.
Family of Nuhanović was also killed in the Srebrenica genocide because they were not allowed to stay in the UN camp.
“We are talking about certain moment in history which could be different for the 8,000 killed people if only someone had the courage and made different decision,” said Žbanić.
She added that this is the biggest budget for one of her movies, and that she needs a lot in order to demonstrate the story as reliable as possible. Srebrenica will be her first war movie, and she’ll need a partner in the production as well as the distributor.
“This is a very emotional story about Europe and my country for me. There is a lot of human ambiguity in the things that we know about Srebrenica. When you start exploring, you can truly see the real dimensions of Srebrenica,” said Žbanić.
It will be a personal story about the interpreter who had to tell his family to leave the UN camp.
“We all have some experience when we were forced to do something that we regretted later. Why did not we do something to make it different,” said Žbanić.
