Sunday, February 5th, marks the 29th anniversary of the horrific massacre at the Markale market in which 68 innocent citizens were killed by a mortar projectile fired from the aggressor’s positions.

Before the commemoration of another sad anniversary and a reminder of the bloody crime against innocent victims, the mayor of the Stari Grad Municipality, Ibrahim Hadzibajric, announced that the municipality will build a new memorial on the Markale market, which will from now on be a dignified memorial to the victims and a place that will be visited every day, not just once a year, and where people will be able to pay tribute.

Place of education of young generations

”We will never allow our victims to be forgotten because this country has lost too much to allow anyone to relativize the crime. These victims deserve a dignified monument at the place of suffering, they deserve that the place where they lost their lives will forever be a reminder to the aggressor of what they did, and a warning to all of us that something like that never happens again,” stated Hadzibajric.

He added that the victims and their families must have a monument next to which everyone will stop, think about, shed a tear, and put a flower in memory of the innocent victims.

The new memorial to the victims of the Markale market massacre will be a memorial monument and a place of education for young generations. At the same time, it will be a place that will be visited by all guests of the city who want to get acquainted with its tragic history and past.

The memorial will be built along Mula Mustafa Baseskija street, on the sidewalk next to the tram tracks, which will be widened by another two meters, Avaz reports.
