Five people died in eastern Romania, and more than a dozen were stuck in flooded areas, emergency services announced on Saturday.

The bodies of three elderly women and two men were found in the localities of Pechea, Draguseni, Kostache Negri and Corod.

Rescue services battled to save 95 people in the hard-hit eastern districts of Galati and Vaslui.

A helicopter was deployed to Galata to assist in the search and rescue.

The storm hit 19 localities in eight counties in Romania, with strong winds toppling dozens of trees that damaged cars and blocked roads.

Authorities sent text messages to residents to warn them of the severe weather as emergency services scrambled to remove water from submerged homes.

Some roads are also closed.

Meteorologists have predicted that storms will hit several European countries over the weekend, including the Czech Republic, Poland, Austria, Germany, Slovakia and Hungary, Federalna writes.
