The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) said 104 journalists and media workers have been killed this year, more than half of them during the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
The federation said at least 138 media workers, including 55 Palestinian media professionals, have been killed since the war began on October 7, 2023.
The IFJ said the number of journalists in prison is also on the rise, with a sharp jump to 520 compared to 427 last year, the AP reported.
“These sad figures show once again how fragile media freedom is and how risky and dangerous the journalism profession is,” said IFJ Secretary General Anthony Belanger.
He added that “the public’s need for information is real at a time when authoritarian regimes are developing around the world.”
When it comes to prisons, the group said that China and Hong Kong are holding 135 journalists behind bars.
