About 4.3 million citizens from outside the European Union (EU) received temporary protection status in the bloc after the beginning of the Russian invasion in Ukraine, and people are still arriving, the European statistical agency Eurostat announced.

“At the end of May 2024, the EU countries that hosted the largest number of beneficiaries of temporary protection from Ukraine were Germany /1,332 million/, Poland /953,255/ and the Czech Republic /356,405/”, the announcement states.

The number of users decreased only in France /by 1,005/, Poland /by 675/ and Latvia /by 15/.

“Compared to the population of each EU country, the highest number of beneficiaries of temporary protection per thousand inhabitants at the end of May 2024 was recorded in the Czech Republic /32.9/, Lithuania /27.2/ and Poland /25.9/, while the average the number at the EU level was 9.5 per thousand people,” specified Eurostat.

The United Nations said in January that more than six million people have fled Ukraine since hostilities began in February 2022.
