vucicSerbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic on Friday handed over the “paper” on the Western Balkans to Austrian Chancellor Christian Kern with the aim of creating a free market and a customs union in the region.

It is an idea that, as he explained, aims to be “closer to our territory” and facilitate the flow of goods.

Vucic added that he already talked with Prime Minister of Albania Edi Rama and Chairman of the Council of Ministers of BiH Denis Zvizdic.

Vucic did not specify what his initiative means, but he noted that the Balkan countries are losing 7 % of revenues due to waiting of trucks at the borders.

“That is my idea. I handed ‘the paper’ to Chancellor Kern, and the idea is to create a free trade area and customs union, with which we will become the more attractive market,” said Vucic, as reported by Al Jazeera.

“The richer we are, the better for us. This is my personal idea and initiative,” said Vucic.

He is convinced that in this document is the future of Serbia and the entire region.

“With this, we would approach our territories and countries in the Western Balkans, and our trucks would not lose 20 hours at the borders, and we would also reduce the waiting for two to three hours, and thus became a much larger and more attractive market for investors,” said Vucic.

He recalled that “some European countries needed 30-40 years to harmonize their customs systems, but the Western Balkans can do it much faster, which would drastically improve chances of even faster economic progress.”
