orlovacaA breathtaking scenery is waiting for you at the entrance to Orlovaca Cave. Underworld decorated with unique cave ornaments, stalactites and stalagmites, pillars that remind on ancient and Renaissance castles…

“This is one of the most beautiful halls in the cave, the hall of pillars, and you can see why, you have over 20 stalactites and stalagmites that connected the ceiling and the floor, and they have a variety of colors, from pure white to dark brown,” said Mladen Samardzic, the expert associate for cultural and natural goods of the Municipality of Pale.

There is around 560 meters long channel through the cave. Its total length is much longer, but only a portion of it is arranged and adapted to tourists. There are a total of three floors.

“This is the third floor, the entrance of the first researchers. Back in 1975, the first speleologists entered the cave through 205 meters long and 50 centimeters wide channel. After 3.5 hours of research, here is what they found,” explained Samardzic.

And they found a total of 14 halls, about which visitors prefer to listen today. Each of them is different from the other, with its appearance and meaning.

This is one of 14 halls in Orlovaca Cave. There are ornaments on all sides, but this one here is called “love kiss” because it is composed of stalactites and stalagmites that are about to connect. This connection might last for about 5,000 years since the formation of one centimeter lasts for around 200 years.

It is known that the cave was home to cave bear more than 16,000 years ago. The cave is also the habitat of the most endangered groups of mammals in Europe – bats.

The cave is opened for visitors from Tuesday to Saturday, in three terms. It can be reached through arranged and lighted trail and it is located between Sarajevo and Pale, just 750 meters away from the main road.
