At a ceremony marking International Women’s Day, the Ambassador of the State of Palestine to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sylvia Abu Laban, emphasized the crucial role women play in preserving identity, rebuilding societies, and shaping the future, highlighting the shared experiences of Palestinian and Bosnian women.
Addressing the gathering, Abu Laban said that International Women’s Day is not merely a symbolic date, but an opportunity to recognize the profound contributions of women in society.
“This evening brings together the stories of Palestinian and Bosnian women – two peoples from different geographies, yet connected by a shared history of resilience,” the ambassador said.
She noted that both societies understand what it means to endure hardship, protect identity, and rebuild life after great loss.
Speaking about the situation in Palestine, Abu Laban said that women there have carried the weight of daily life under occupation for generations, protecting families, preserving culture, and defending dignity despite enormous challenges.
“Palestinian women are not only witnesses to history – they are also its makers,” she said, adding that they contribute to society as mothers, teachers, doctors, artists, and leaders.
According to her, Palestinian women do not seek pity, but justice.
Abu Laban also drew parallels with the experience of women in Bosnia and Herzegovina, who, she said, demonstrated extraordinary courage and perseverance during and after the war.
“They helped preserve communities, defend truth, and rebuild a nation after one of the darkest chapters of modern European history,” she said.
The ambassador, who described herself as a Palestinian woman from Jerusalem, said that identity is something people carry within themselves and defend through their actions, regardless of distance.
She stressed that culture and memory play an essential role in resilience, sending a message that women are not on the margins of history but at its very center.
Abu Laban concluded by expressing hope that cultural initiatives and shared stories could serve as a bridge between Palestine and Bosnia and Herzegovina, built on common human values and the strength of women.
She extended her respect to women in Palestine, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and around the world who continue to choose life, dignity, and hope.
