An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 on the Richter scale hit the northwestern Chinese region of Xinjiang, the China Earthquake Center announced.

The earthquake struck Akchi County in the northwestern Chinese region of Xinjiang at 12:14 p.m. local time, and the epicenter was at a depth of 11 kilometers.

So far, there is no information about casualties or material damage, the Xinhua news agency reported, citing local authorities, adding that the areas around the epicenter are sparsely populated.

Electricity distribution networks are working normally, and trains are also running.

An earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale shook the border region of Kyrgyzstan and Xinjiang on January 23, killing at least three people.
