Romania scrambled Fighter Jets

Romania scrambled fighter jets after a drone violated its airspace during a Russian attack on Ukrainian infrastructure near the border, the Romanian Defense Ministry said.

Bucharest claims the drone entered Romania during Russian strikes on Ukraine.

The Defense Ministry said authorities had warned citizens in the southeastern Tulcea county, near the Danube River and the Ukrainian border, to take shelter.

The statement added that fighters detected the drone in national airspace and tracked it until it disappeared from radar 20 kilometers southwest of the village of Cilia Veche.

“The drone did not fly over populated areas and did not pose an immediate threat to the population,” the statement said.

The Romanian move came after Poland deployed aircraft and closed an airport in the eastern city of Lublin due to a threat of a drone attack.

Romania, a member of the European Union and NATO, which shares a 650-kilometer border with Ukraine, has already had multiple instances of drone fragments falling on its territory since the start of the Russian special operation in Ukraine in 2022.
